On November 28, the Lower & Upper secondary (LS & US) Choir Fall Music Concerts took place at AISG. This year was a special occasion as all the upper and lower secondary choir students performed in the same concert. The LS & US choirs sang many songs separately and together. John P. from grade 9 said, “In the CAS Choir, we performed three songs: “Modimo,” “Apple Tree,” “Brave,” and “Daemon Irrepit Callidus.” For the APAC Choir, we sang two pieces: “Sehati” and “Your Soul is Song.” Additionally, we collaborated with the LS Choir to perform “There Has to Be a Song” and “Why We Sing.”
It seems as though everyone enjoyed this change. Grade 11 Luke U. is a veteran in the choir since he was in the choir for two and a half years. The veteran said, “This is really nice with grades 6-12 as choir is a legacy program. This means it’s heavily built on what came before. Having one concert allows younger students to learn and grown.”
It was nice to see LS & US students get along together and grow together. Luke U. further stated his role of being a veteran in the choir. He said, “Being a veteran in choir means I’ve spent a lot of time. I’ve spent a lot of time getting better as a performer certainly, but I’ve spent even more time learning how to work collaboratively with others. Being a veteran in anything means you care a whole lot. And when you care a while lot over time, you bound to meet others who care too. These are the people that will shape your life as an individual as well as mine.”
Even the choir director for the performance, Cyril Udall, showed much insight into the learning for this performance. He said, “It was special witnessing students as they experience their first time performing with a secondary choir that also included upper secondary students. We started and ended the concert with all the students singing together. I think students learn so much from each other during these events.”
The preparation was not easy as well. Cyril Udall said, “We had been preparing for last Thursday’s performance since the 23-24 school year, when we began choosing and learning a few of the pieces.”
However, John P. commented some things he didn’t like of the Fall Music Concert. John P. said, “I didn’t really get the chance to perform my choir skills as much as APAC choir since some of the songs had to be flexible with LS students’ skill wise.”
This did not mean John P. didn’t improve or enjoy this performance. John P. then commented on his improvements on this performance. He said, “The most meaningful song for me was “Your Soul is Song.” Its profound lyrics, combined with the dynamic rhythms crafted by the producers, captivated not only the APAC members but also the guest conductor. However, what truly made this experience special was the energy we shared as a choir. Our choir teacher once told us that when everyone sings the same song, our hearts beat in unison. I didn’t truly understand this concept until we performed “Your Soul is Song.” The connection we felt as a group was indescribable, and it left a lasting impression on me.”
All and all, it was great to see the choir performance tturn out to be a success with students getting to develop their singing skills and have fun.
