How many of you have used your phone before you sleep or even does this on a regular basis? Social media, news, chats, games…Come on, you can admit it.

What we don’t realize is that our phones are actually disrupting our sleep cycle. When it gets darker outside, our bodies secrete the hormone melatonin that helps us fall asleep .Some wavelengths of light, those at the blue-green end of the spectrum, messes up this sleep system. In the new models, this problem gets worse, because each new smartphone model gets “blue and brighter”, according to Profesesor Paul Gringras, professor of children’s sleep medicine.

He adds that even though there are currently some sleep-aware apps or computer programs that reduce the blue-green light, manufacturers need to show more responsibility.
“There is converging data to say if you are in front of these devices at night-time ti could prevent you [from] falling asleep by an extra hour.”

So the next time you are up at night, unable to sleep, think twice before reaching for your phone on your bedside table.
