Last Saturday, on January 28, 2018, the GISAC basketball tournament was held in AISG’s Science Park campus. Six different international schools in Guangdong province gathered to compete and showcase what they have learned during the past three months of the basketball season. The six schools included Clifford International School (CIS), Utahloy International School (UISG), Utahloy International School of Zengcheng (UISZ), British School of Guangzhou (BSG), International School of Dongguan (ISD), and finally, our school, American International School of Guangzhou (AISG).

During the season, the six schools enlisted in the league played against with each other at least once. The first seed of the tournament would automatically go to the finals of the GISAC tournament while the remaining teams competed to determine which team earns the opportunity to challenge the first place team.

The AISG boys’ team ended the season with two losses against CIS and UISG, resulting in becoming the third seed in the league. During the GISAC tournament, the boys’ team played two games, and the first game was against Clifford. Since AISG boys team had already lost to Clifford once during the season, this game was crucial for a revenge. The game was also important since it decided whether the team goes to the finals to verse against Utahloy International School, the first seed of the GISAC league. The game was tight during the entire first half, but in the third quarter, AISG outplayed CIS, and thus, became the victor. In the finals, the AISG boys’ team displayed outstanding defense against UISG, letting them only score about 10 points per quarter. However, the offense was not working well for AISG. As a result, AISG lost to UISG for the second time during this 17-18 basketball season. In the award ceremony, the boys’ team earned two trophies: one for being 3rd place in the league and one for being 2nd place in the tournament.

AISG girls team finished even better than the boys’ team. The girls’ team did not allow other GISAC teams beat them even once; the team ended the season as the first seed with an outstanding zero loss season. The girls’ team continued to thrive in the tournament. The girls first played against BSG and defeated the opponent by a landslide. The finals game was played against the International School of Dongguan. Despite having physical disadvantages against ISD, AISG girls team still won the other team by outscoring 10 points during the third quarter. At night when all games were over, AISG girls proudly held up two golden cups for their first place in the league and their first place in the tournament.

On January 31, both boys and girls AISG varsity basketball teams will travel to Taejeon, South Korea to compete in the grand final tournament: APAC. Both teams hope to showcase everything they have learned during the season and bring AISG with good results.
