The holidays are upon us, which means it is time to start getting into the Christmas spirit! Every year, around two weeks before Christmas, my family and I like to have nights in which we all gather around the living room with a bowl of popcorn and watch Christmas films. After years of this tradition, I have solidified my top three Christmas movies of all time and I will share them with you, so during your Christmas movie nights, there will only be smiles and the sound of laughter.
Elf: Elf is an American film released in 2003, starring Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel. The synopsis of the film is about a man who was raised as an elf who learns his true identity travels to New York City to meet with his biological father, and spreads Christmas cheer along his journey. This is a movie that has laughing moments throughout, some touching moments, and definitely a movie you want to watch with your loved ones!
A Christmas Carol: I watched this movie last Christmas after performing it at a festival and was completely moved by the storyline. This movie is an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ story of the same name, and the main character Ebenezer Scrooge is played in the voice of Jim Carrey; who is an old, bitter man that despises anything Christmas-related, forces to visit his joyful nephew, and treats Bob Cratchit, an employee of his, badly.  At the beginning of the film, he is visited by the ghost of Jacob Marley, who died seven years ago and is forced to spend his afterlife tied to metal chains as a punishment of his greediness. Jacob Marley warns Scrooge to change his ways and will suffer an even worse fate than himself if he does not change himself to become a better person and tells him he will be visited by three ghosts to guide him. Scrooge is visited by Ghost of Christmas Past; who shows him how his abhorrence of his environment has a negative impact on the people around him. He is then visited by Ghost of Christmas Present; who shows him the lonely Christmas he will spend this year if he does not change for the better. Lastly, he is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come; who shows him the final consequences of his greed. He sees his own death in the future, with no one to mourn for him because of his greediness, and decides to change himself for the better. Scrooge gives a child on the street some money to buy a turkey to deliver to the Cratchits as a way of saying thanks to all his employee has done for him, attends his nephews dinner, donates money to the poor, and celebrates with men along the way. Scrooge has become a kinder man and a second father to Tiny Tim, who survives because of Scrooge’s charity.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas: A film played by Jim Carrey about a reclusive green Grinch that decides to ruin Christmas for the citizens of Whoville. He sneaks into town to swipe everything holiday-related from them due to his own self-interests. However, the finds a change in his course when he encounters a little girl named Cindy Lou Who that changes his perspective on Christmas. Even after he has taken everything Christmas-related from the citizens, they are still happy; and as he watches how they can be so cheerful after they lost everything, the emotion gets to him and his once withered heat grows three sizes. The Grinch returns the presents to Whoville and apologizes for his misdeed. This is a great movie to watch with your family especially if you have younger siblings, because the moral of the story will educate them about how to be a good person.
To get into the Christmas spirit, watch these three classic holiday films with your family, decorate your home of green, red and white, and have an unforgettable Christmas surrounded by family and friends. Happy holidays!
