Student Council Elections – Preview

The annual StuCo elections are coming up! Specifically, the GenCo, or general council (meaning grade level councils) elections will be taking place next Tuesday, August 28. It will be a community event schedule that day, where each grade will be assigned to different rooms/areas. From the freshmen to the seniors, each grade is responsible for choosing their own representatives- GenCo members – through a voting system where each candidate of the different positions will provide a brief 2-3 minute speech in front of the student body. As tradition, there will be a total of 4 positions in each GenCo – the Secretary, the Treasurer, the Vice President and the President. Results of this election will be announced before Saturday of the same week, as the StuCo leadership workshop will take place in ErSha campus. StuCo hosts big events such as the Talent Show and Open Mic Night annually.

The chosen GenCo members will take role of representatives of their own grade and will be given the responsibility to plan out grade level events with great prizes to raise positive energy for the grade. Moreover, it is each member’s duty to raise school spirit and to participate in school activities.

I interviewed some candidates for the upcoming StuCo election. A senior stated; “I feel nervous because this is my senior year, meaning that it’s my last shot at becoming a GenCo leader, and I want my last year of high-school serving for the student body,” which demonstrates the anxiousness of candidates prior to the election, which also emphasizes the importance of winning and the candidate’s eagerness to achieve the position. I asked for a sophomore candidate’s  opinion on this election for diversity in answers. They stated, “I’m nervous for the election, however I [am] also excited because I know I can positively contribute to the AISG community”

Additionally, I asked for Andy J, president of the Executive Council, for his point of view upon this year’s elections. “This is [his] third year in the executive council of StuCo and every year GenCo elections make me very excited to see the passion from different students. [He] great to see many students willing to contribute to our school community and volunteer in helping out to coordinate events for our school. [He] wish[es] the best of luck to all the candidates running for a StuCo position this year,” he announced.

Often, many run for student council positions simply because it looks good in college applications as it is a leadership role. However, there are still lots of students trying out for a position to contribute in meetings to create a positive impact, like the two candidates I interviewed.

I personally believe StuCo elections are always one of the most competitive and intense elections throughout the school year, and as a person that ran for the position of president last year and of course again this year, I can relate to the nervousness and excitement other candidates are feeling.
