On Tuesday, August 28, 10th graders all gathered in the theatre for the STUCO elections. Here are the nominees:
- President: Ben K.
- Vice President: Andy H. and Caeley K.
- Secretary: Chie Y. and Ishita A.
- Treasurer: Rahul S.
All candidates gave a 2 to 3 minute speech to the whole grade to persuade the group to vote for them, each discussing about how they qualify in being a representative and leader of grade 10. Rahul S, running for treasurer, stated that he “will contribute as much as possible and [he will be] motivated to fulfill [our] needs.” Throughout the speech, Rahul demonstrated his ability to be treasurer by discussing his previous experiences with leadership and his ability to manage money well. Andy H., running for vice president, stated that although he doesn’t have much experience leading a group of people, he is passionate for this position, willing to do anything to make this school year enjoyable for everyone.
After all the persuading speeches, all students had a chance to vote for who they thought was best fit for the STUCO positions. Here were the results:
- President: Ben K
- Vice President: Andy H.
- Secretary: Chie Y.
- Treasurer: Rahul S.
After the speeches, some students were asked how they felt about the STUCO election and what could be improved. Paoping Y. commented, “it was obvious that people spent a lot of time on their speeches, and I think the elections might not be as fair as they should be because if someone was really good at writing, their speech will be well written, that might not actually affect or reflect their ability to perform their task properly, I think that a big flaw in the election system.” Another student, Cheryl Z., stated: “I feel like the speeches from the students that were “running unopposed” could’ve tried harder and they shouldn’t just randomly say stuff.” Overall, most of the students were satisfied with the speeches and trust that the grade representatives will do a great job making our school year memorable.
