Four Candidates, Four Positions: Results of 9th Grade StuCo Election

The freshmen packed into the dance room on Tuesday afternoon, taking their seats in front of the three candidates (the fourth candidate was in Hong Kong) for this year’s StuCo elections. All positions were noncompetitive, but the freshman voters were still eager to hear the candidates’ speeches.

The first speaker and candidate for Treasurer, Celine Feng, gave a promising speech to the 9th grade audience; she guaranteed that she would put her best efforts into running activities and managing our money well.

Isadora Busato, a new AISG student who ran for Secretary, focused her uplifting speech on student ideas and what it meant for her to become Secretary. “I guarantee I will try my best to come up with interesting ideas throughout the year to keep you guys from feeling too stressed or unhappy.”

Runner-up President Sabrina Chu gave a witty, intelligent, yet powerfully encouraging speech during her 2-minute period, receiving claps and a whirlwind of laughter from the audience. She addressed the major factors including school spirit, interesting events, and finally, the importance of student opinion. In her speech, she said that “Sometimes we’re all just too tired for school spirit, so this year what our StuCo wants to do is to just raise a little bit more spirit, throwing that little bit of time for you to hang out with your friends and have fun. So starting from today, tell us. What do you like, what do you want, what did you not like, why was it boring, and if you can help us, we can help you.”

Despite not being at the elections event, Bobo Leung, a candidate for the Vice President position, recorded her speech and made a notable shoutout to the continuous school food complaint: “We know we probably won’t be able to improve the school food, but that doesn’t mean we can’t provide ice cream on days that are most stressful.” Her honest ideas made her a good and standout candidate, even without her being present.

9th grade StuCo elections ended a half hour early, and while the students bustled out to get free ice cream, I interviewed audience member Jami Robertson. “There was no competition. So we really didn’t have the choice to choose the person that we wanted,” explained Jami, as a group of the girls around her agreed.

With all the candidates uncontested, this year’s 9th grade StuCo elections were both easier for the candidates and perhaps less interesting to the voters/audience. Each candidate won their positions on the Student Council, and with the enthusiastic all-female team, 2018-2019 is guaranteed to be an exciting time for all 9th grade students.
