Long Weekend—Thanksgiving

• Bookmarks: 29706

AISG students have a long weekend (November 22 to 25) this week for American Thanksgiving. You might be wondering: why do we get Thanksgiving break? Assistant Principal Mr. Tragert explains, “As an American school in China, we have a responsibility to honor our host country and so that’s why we are off for things such as golden week and Chinese new year.” It’s unfair for AISG to only provide holidays that are important in China and ignore American traditions. Mr. Tragert elaborates that, “since we are also an American school, meaningful holidays that are core to American cultures, like Christmas or Thanksgiving deserve a holiday too. That’s a way for us to bring in some of that identity of being an American school.”

So what are AISG students going to be doing this weekend? AISG’s population consists of students that come from many different heritages, so there are students that don’t celebrate this holiday. Senior Sameer S. said, “My family doesn’t really celebrate this holiday, but I will use this long weekend to catch up on assignments.” Sophomore Andy H. will be “relaxing and enjoying the long weekend.”

However, there are also students that celebrate Thanksgiving. Sophomore Josh H. said, “I am going to go out and enjoy a meal with my family. We celebrate this holiday every year and this long weekend gives us the opportunity to have a long and nice meal.” Mr. Tragert also celebrates Thanksgiving and is “going to go out for dinner with family and friends.”
