God Friended Me: Worth a Watch?

What would you do if God sent you a friend request on FaceBook? God Friended Me, created by Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt, is about Miles, an atheist podcaster who receives a friend request from God on Facebook. The God account sends Miles friend requests of people in need, and in each episode he must help them with the help of his two friends, Cara and Rakesh.

At first, Miles is frustrated and wants to be left alone. He continues helping the people in need while tracking the “God” account at the same time. Over these episodes, he realizes that this is a gift. Although he still doesn’t believe in God, he’s given a chance to do good by helping people.

What do AISG students think about God Friended Me? It’s relatively new, so it’s not very popular, however, there are some students that watch and enjoy this program. Sophomore Carmen C. said, “it’s a really cool TV show because the plot is very different compared to other shows that I usually watch. I would recommend [it] to my friends.”

There are many articles out there that say that God Friended Me is not the best show as it’s unrealistic and feels both stretched out and rushed. IMDb gives it a rating of 6.6/10. This isn’t the highest rating and there are many better shows, but it’s a way to pass the time and opens some interesting questions for viewers about ethics and why people should do good—things that the typical comedy audience might not otherwise take the time to think about. Don’t just judge a show by its reviews! In the beginning, The Office (a very popular American remake of a British comedy) had bad ratings; however, many now consider it a comedy masterpiece. Judge for yourself: watch an episode of God Friended Me and see if you enjoy it!
