A New Sensation: The Instagram Egg

An egg has managed to take the internet by storm and has been able to shake the entire populace. Yes, you’ve heard right, an egg has managed to break the internet. 

On the 4th of January, an Instagram account was created under the username “world_record_egg.” It had a single picture, that of a round, brown egg and the caption on the picture read “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram, beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)!”

Within a few days, the account started garnering a lot of attention and it seemed as if the impossible was going to happen. A week after the picture was posted, the Instagram egg had reached its goal. It had managed to dethrone Instagram’s reigning monarch, Kylie Jenner.

A picture of an egg was able to climb the Janus-faced ladder of social importance and emerged from the recesses of a dirty little hen coop to becoming the most liked picture on Instagram.

Somehow the universe had been tilted on its axis. A picture of a simple, mundane brown egg had managed to accumulate a larger number of likes than a photo announcing the birth of Kylie Jenner’s daughter, Stormi. In its short life-span, it had achieved more than what most people are able to in their entire life. The egg had also surpassed Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement picture which came as a shock to many. Simran L., a sophomore, says, “[She] thinks it’s stupid how much attention is being given to an egg when more important issues currently exist”, she further goes on to say, “If people come together to address real-life problems instead of coming together on social platforms to like pictures of an egg, it will be more beneficial. “

The @world_record_egg account has spurred on several other similar accounts which seem to have taken inspiration from it, such as a world record chicken, pizza and even unicorn account. Merchandise such as shirts and bandanas are also being sold by the @world_record_egg account as well as other independent manufacturers, with slogans such as “I liked the egg” being embellished on the t-shirts.  

It doesn’t seem as if the @world_record_egg account will retreat back into the shadows. In fact, it has posted two new pictures since the debut of the original picture of the egg. These new pictures still have the brown egg as the star of the show, but the egg now seems to be developing cracks. With each new picture, the crack can be seen becoming bigger and bigger. Many people theorize that the egg will ultimately crack open to reveal a baby chick or even Kylie Jenner’s face. Some of the more far-fetched theories include having Donald Trump’s face popping out, or that of Vladimir Putin.

Barely a month into the new year, and 2019 has already proven how crazy it will be.
