On January 22, Tuesday, our first pep rally of 2019 was held for the basketball, swimming, theater, table tennis, and band students. The boys basketball varsity team will be making their way to Hong Kong and the girls to Shanghai for APAC. The swimming and table tennis team will both be going to Beijing. The band and theater team will go on their APAC after the Chinese New Year break. Pep Rallies are held to raise school spirit and cheer on the varsity teams.

The pep rally was hosted by seniors Sameer S and Javin L. It started off with the two MCs and Ms. Dean pumping up the school. After, each APAC team came up one by one and shared a bit about their team. It’s common for teams to share introductory videos which are short, concise and filled with many jokes which keeps the audience engaged and interested. In AISG pep rallies, we support all our teams including the arts. So after the basketball, swimming, and table tennis team was introduced, the APAC Theater group put on a short and fun skit. Then, the APAC band played a short piece that they had been working on.

This pep rally was held in the theater, instead where it’s normally held, the gym. Since there’s a lot of space in the gym, it’s common for teams to hold activities, such as freshmen against seniors or scoring from half court. Sophomore, Bryan S. stated, “I think these short activities are the best part of the pep rallies because it tends to be very entertaining. Also, the audience sometimes has the opportunity to participate, for example, last year people in the audience were encouraged to come down and try to score a half-court shot.” Many people enjoy these activities and were doubting the fact that this pep rally was going to be held in the theater. However, this pep rally turned out to be quite entertaining and fun for the audience, as many were showing school spirit and cheering on the teams, which isn’t very common in our pep rallies. Sophomore, Jeff H. stated “honestly, I wasn’t expecting much, as normally pep rallies aren’t the most interesting. However, this pep rally was different. I’m not sure what led to this pep rally being different, but I hope all our pep rallies are like this.” In my opinion, many things led to this success, such as Ms. Dean pumping up the school, new MCs and funny introductory videos. Pep rallies are important because it’s a great way to support our athletes and performers. This pep rally was a great way to start the first pep rally of the year and as students, I think we should try to keep this up.
