2019 Quiz Bowl Asian Championships

On March 22, AISG Quiz Bowl teams left to Shanghai to compete in the NAQT Asian Championships. The tournament took place at SAS Puxi, with twenty teams participating. AISG sent three teams, team A, B and C to compete against others.

The first day consisted of a round robin to determine the bracket where each team would play in the next day. By the end of day one, Guangzhou A team was in third place, just behind Puxi A and Pudong A, with only one loss. Guangzhou B team was in 13th place and the Guangzhou C team placed last, though they gave an impressive effort. According to Mr. Sinclair, one of the Quiz Bowl coaches, “the B team played really well, finishing 5-7 after losing a number of very close games. With a little luck, they could have finished in the top half of the competition”. He also said that our C team played well too, and “got steadily better as the tournament progressed, but did not manage to win a game.”

The next day, teams were separated and competed with others in the same bracket. As the Guangzhou A team managed to beat both Puxi A and Pudong A, but lost to Puxi B, it created a three-way tie between Puxi A, Pudong A and Guangzhou A.

At last, the AISG A team went into the finals with advantage — having beaten both of the other teams previously. The result was a game between Puxi A and Pudong A, with AISG A playing the winner. Puxi A managed to beat Pudong A, then managed to beat the AISG A team, also. AISG A eventually placed second, with Terry M, from the A team, taking home the medal for 5th highest scorer individually.
