On March 1, the girls’ and boys’ varsity soccer teams travelled to Shanghai to compete in the Tricities tournament. The returning players on the girls team were determined and ready for the competition as they all shared a similar goal. The goal was to get at least third place out of four teams.
Last year, the girls’ team did not result in victory. However, the girls’ came back with a good result, despite the fact that their team was stacked with new players. The captains, Regina K. and I, were beyond determined to use our new skill set and fight for our place in the top three.
“I have a good feeling about this weekend.” said assistant coach Farrell Harwood. “I think the team is in a strong place. We have new ideas, new skills, and most importantly, we have a team that wants the win.”
The results were outstanding; AISG placed second overall, with SASPX placing first. During the tournament, our team had never looked more confident. The passing techniques we had been practicing were effective in the the games and the level of communication between our players have improved. Although we lost many games, AISG consistently played hard and without giving up. The entire weekend was riddled with cold rain and slippery fields but the girls powered through with only little complaints.
Each game was taken seriously and we relied heavily on our starting line- up. The most satisfying moment of the tournament was not standing up to collect the trophy, but was beating WAB (Western Academy Beijing) 3-1, as they had beat us 0-4 in the same Tournament last year.
“I have never been so proud of my girls.” said Senior Regina K. “We showed cooperation, confidence, and determination. We earned this.”
