April is national poetry month in the U.S., created by the Academy of American Poets which started in 1996 (for more information, click here). It is a month to appreciate and acknowledge poetry’s role in our culture. At AISG, poetry month will be celebrated through various activities, with an after-school event held on April 25 as well as a school-wide competition to vote for your favorite poem—student nominations for excellent poems will be accepted beginning the week we return from April break.
Bonus fact: Shakespeare was born and died in April.
On April 25, all students are invited to the library to share their favorite poems by professional poets OR recite their own original poetry. Snacks will be served, and this is a great opportunity to bond with other students and faculty members through the appreciation of this medium, which has been a feature of human expression since antiquity.
You may think that poetry is not relevant to young people, but poetry—especially as a form of protest and expression for marginalized groups—has been slowly gaining popularity among younger people around the world today. Next year in January, our school will host Luka Lesson, a highly esteemed slam poet from Australia. Watch The Beacon for information about his poetry and his visit in the near future, and see here for a sneak preview (VPN required… warning: if you hate snakes, you may not want to click).
