Why Are Freshies Not Going To Prom?

The annual prom on May 25 is soon approaching and seniors have already started preparing their dresses and suits. Prom is a nice celebration for students to dress up, dance, and spend time with friends. In many schools who celebrate prom, the majority only allow the graduating class or including the junior year to participate. In AISG, all grade levels in high school are invited to the prom, but there are many underclassmen who are not planning to attend.

This year, freshmen students have decided to not attend prom as they think the ticket price is too expensive. Another reason is that they are not as close to the upperclassmen so the environment would be awkward for them. Bobo L., a freshman who will not be attending, commented that prom “should be for the upperclassmen to enjoy their last year or two with their friends.” In addition, she added that “prom is quite expensive, but [she] still thinks it should be open to all grade levels. Underclassmen should have the choice of whether they want to spend time with their friends and have a fun time.”

In comparison, many freshmen last year did go to prom. Sophomore Grace C., who attended last year’s prom, commented that she “went to prom last year because there were seniors who [she] were close friends with and [she] wanted to make a video for them. [She] thought prom would be a fun time with the seniors for their last year. Not only did [she] go for the seniors, but [she] also had friends in Pulse which asked [her] to go with them.” Moreover, Grace C. also added that “it is good that all grade levels are invited to prom because our school is small, so there aren’t that many people in each grade. Plus, not all seniors go to prom, so without the other grades in HS, there might not be enough people to attend the prom for it to happen.”
