Supercell is a mobile game development company that was founded and is based in Helsinki, Finland. Creating many mobile games such as Boom Beach, Hay Day, or Battle Buddies, Supercell is perhaps most notable for creating the MMO, CoC (Clash of Clans). Being a popular mobile MMO strategy game, CoC rakes in millions of dollars in revenue for Supercell, but seeing as that wasn’t enough, Supercell recently released a new mobile MMO strategy game that slightly differs from their famed CoC called Clash Royale. With similar graphics and sound effects, Clash Royale’s setting and characters are of the same universe as CoC. Putting the setting aside, there are some notable differences between CoC and Clash Royale, one being the usage of cards and chests.
Clash Royale is a mobile MMO strategy game that involves the usage of cards and elixir (similar to the concept of other online Card games such as Hearthstone that uses cards and mana) to summon out troops that appear on a gridded battlefield. Here is where the similarities between CoC and Clash Royale come back into play as the troops that are summoned rush to the enemies side to attack their base or troops, similar to the way CoC players summon out their troops that rush to attack the enemies base which may have defending troops.
Although the invasion of the enemy’s base is similar to CoC, in Clash Royale the enemy has the chance to attack your base as well thereby separating CoC from Clash Royale once again. Other things that differentiate Clash Royale from CoC is the gaining of gold, gems, and exp. Unlike CoC, things like gold, gems, and exp are gained in Clash Royale by opening chests that can be obtained by winning battles, passing time by, or buying them in the store. Other things like cards can also be obtained in the same way.
Despite being a fairly new game, Clash Royale has already quickly infiltrated the corners of AISG as many students, myself included, have downloaded the game on their phones in order to have a taste of the battlefield. Perhaps Clash Royale will become a game that will become popular amongst AISG students in the near future and like the existing AISG clans in Clash of Clans, perhaps there will be an AISG clan for Clash Royale.
