On March 10th, the AISG badminton team traveled to UISG to participate in the ACAMIS conference which included schools YCIS, NCPA, UISG, AISG, QSI, SIS, CDIS, and ISB. For the tournament, each schools from the five team had to chose 5 singles players for both boy and girl and 4 double pairs for both gender. Different from the rules of Tri Cities, ACAMIS players were separated into different pools that were chosen randomly and put into divisions afterwards depending on the rankings each players got in their pools. After the divisions were made, the players will play in a game called “eliminations”, which basically means the players would be knocked out of the contest in competing for first place as soon as they lose a game within their divisions.
The first game the AISG players played was a round robin game in the pools they were assigned to. The first singles player, freshmen Javin Liu had a winning streak inside Pool C with large gaps between the points. As the winning player in the pool, he got into division 1; the best division to compete for first place. However, due to lack of competitive playing experience, Javin lost one game against Utahloy contestant Ian and resulted in 3rd place. “Even though I didn’t get first place, I will practice more and try my best next time. It was a very fun experience for me overall.” (Javin Liu 9) On the other hand, singles player Michael Zhou won all of his games in the his pool by a smaller margin, getting him to play in division 2. In the division he was in, he again beat all the players, allowing him claim the spot of first place in his division. Similar to Michael Zhou, singles player Lordphone, won first place in division 3 after defeating all of the players he was competing with.
In the boys doubles games, the first doubles player Javin Liu and Michael Zhou received first place in division 1 by claiming victories over all games both in the pool and division and they think “this made up the loss of losing in singles, I’m quite happy about this.” (Javin Liu)
For the girls badminton team, Queenie Chen, the second singles player fought her way into division 1 but unfortunately, she got eliminated from the game in becoming the champion. Same with the other singles female player, not being able to adapt the opponents playing style caused the girls team except singles three player Agnes Lau; getting third place in division three to get beaten and knocked out of the competition.
The girls doubles team brought back a 3rd place from doubles pair Nina and Stella in division 2, but other than that one win, the entire girls team was eliminated from competing for the top three spots.
“We are still freshmen and we have plenty of time to improve, getting eliminated is nothing.” (Nina Y). The AISG badminton team this year is a relatively young team, containing mostly freshmen players, will have plenty of time to practice and improve. As a rather inexperienced team, getting a satisfying rankings in ACAMIS and third place in Tri Cities brought all of our hopes up for the badminton team and the way it’ll develop in the future.
