Lifeguarding the Guangzhou Metro

Guangzhou’s Metro is an important part of Guangzhou’s public transits and is used by many citizens to get to from place to place. With an average of over 6 million people riding the Metro everyday, it’s needless to say that the Metro system is flooded with people all seven days of the week. The large amount of riders in combination with a popular destination forces the Chinese government to implement “lifeguards”.

On March 26th at the Tiyu Xilu station (体育西路), “lifeguard” stands can be seen situated around the train doors with guards sitting atop monitoring the crowd. With a large influx of people going to and from Tiyu Xilu, it is no wonder that the Chinese Metro would position guard stands in the Metro. The elevated guard stands were merely temporary and were moved, but with future plans for a Guangzhou-Foshan line ahead, who knows when those stands will be back.
