From August 16th to August 18th, the AISG math team went to the Beijing Royal School to participate in the ASDAN Math Tournament (AMT). This year’s team consisted of Ben L., Terry M., Daniel P., Cathy Z., Andy H., Kathleen W., Alex K. and Lucas E. This year, everyone on the AISG math team achieved an award and did an excellent job representing the school.

Participants were involved in individual and team rounds in the tournament. Individual rounds varied into different sub-units, such as algebra, geometry, and discrete/calculus. Team rounds included power, estimation and guts rounds.

The results of individual rounds are as follows:

  • Algebra Top 10 %: Daniel P., Terry M.
  • Algebra Top 25%: Cathy Z., Alex K., Lucas E.
  • Algebra Top 40%: Andy H.
  • Calculus Top 25%: Daniel P., Terry M., and Ben L.
  • Discrete Top 40%: Kathleen W.

Everyone in the AISG math team had a pleasant time at AMT. Alex K., a tenth-grade contestant, remarked that “it was interesting to see other students as into math as I am”

Apart from all the competition, there were mini-events set up during the evening about math. Students and teachers were able to go to different stations that involved activities with math. One of the events was a mini-lecture about math theorems. Ms. Francis said, “I personally enjoyed listening to professor Po Shen Loh’s mini-lesson about the Lucas Theorem.”

Unfortunately, AISG couldn’t win an award in any of the team rounds due to the difficulty of the questions. However, it was a good experience for everyone on the team. Cathy Z. said “The team rounds are as fun as they are challenging. It was interesting to be able to collaborate on problems we rarely encounter in school.”

AISG has a math club led Ben Lu and Daniel Park that takes place every Tuesday during lunch. Anyone who is interested in math can join the club and solve math problems with other enthusiastic mathematicians in a relaxing atmosphere. Math Club is looking forward to recruiting new members to go to the AMT next year.
