‘Perspicacious Rams’ Introduce Start-Up Quiz Team

Yes, AISG is now home of the Perspicacious Rams, an appropriate name to accommodate the beginnings  of our school Quiz Team.

AISG will be setting up an official Quiz Team next year, to compete against schools like Shanghai Puxi, HKIS, Concordia, Brent, and Singapore American School, according to a notice published on AISG’s Daily Bulletin.

To prepare, our school has been organising “Quiz Team Pre-Season Training” these past few Tuesday and Thursday lunches. A separate notice was posted on the Middle School daily bulletin, inviting 8th graders to participate as well.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of a “Quiz Team” or a “Quiz Bowl“, I’m talking about a game in which two teams of around 4 people each “compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, sports, and popular culture”.

The game is already being played by some of AISG’s regional rivals such as Concordia, and is played popularly at the college level.

While quiz teams aren’t part of well known programs like APAC, it will be a welcome addition to our school’s growing list of extra-curricular activities, already attracting some trivia-enthusiasts.

Indeed Quiz Bowl involves questions from all areas, most competitions requiring teams of at least 4 people. Generally speaking positions in the team(s) are still “up for grabs” however, welcoming anyone “If you like to read, are good at math, think robotics is cool, know anything at all about art, watch The Discovery Channel, know who James Garfield was, have ever been called a nerd, geek, or a dweeb, or if you just want to add awesomeness to your college applications”.

Participating in a few lunch time sessions revealed to me that many of the questions were quite similar to the likes you’d find in Jeopardy, or Trivia Crack (Though you won’t get 4 answers to choose from). So far Quiz Team lunch time sessions have mainly been testing students’ knowledge on various topics, also familiarising them with the Quiz Bowl format.

If you’re interested, perhaps you should see the brief gameplay rules, or start coming to the lunchtime sessions in room 319.
