Why Selena Gomez is Considering Retirement from the Music Industry

Selena Gomez is an American singer, producer, and actress. She is one of the most influential celebrities in the United States on social media, with 215 million followers on Instagram. At age 28, she has three albums that have all reached no.1 in the Billboard 200 and have received 18 Teen Choice Awards.   

 Selena Gomez made the cover for April 2021, Vogue. In an interview, she expressed the possibility of retiring from her musical career.    

She says, “It’s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously.” She thinks that her hit single ‘Lose you to Love me’ from her third album ‘Rare’ was one of her best releases, but she stated that many people still think it was not sufficient.  

Selena stated that she wanted to focus on her acting career if she decides to retire from the music industry. She is currently filming her Hulu series Only Murders in the Building alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short.   

 She was also cast as the starring protagonist in the biopic In the Shadow of the Moon about an openly-gay Peruvian mountaineer and social entrepreneur, Silvia Vásquez-Lavado. Gomez’s production company, July Moon Productions, is also producing the pending horror thriller movie Dollhouse.   

Selena Gomez’s acting career can be traced back to her days with Barney (2002) and Wizards of Waverly Place. Her singing career originated when she sang the Wizards of Waverly Place theme song, an Emmy-winning American sitcom.

Freshman at AISG Elsie Z. says that she is surprised, and says, “Personally I think she’s doing okay,” adding “she has a lot of fans and lots of people look up to her.”

Another freshman, Suyeon J. said that Selena Gomez deserves a break, “[…] because she has been acting since she was very young.”

Upon hearing Gomez’s plans to retire from the music industry, celebrity Cardi B jumped to her defense. Cardi B has won a Grammy award, five American Music Awards, eight Billboard Music Awards, and many more.   

The rapper tweeted that she didn’t think Selena should retire and that “I think she needs one more era.” She added that she would love to give Gomez some ideas.   

Cardi B commented on Gomez’s persona in real life, and how she is ‘too sweet’ to go through all the malicious comments she has gotten. She stated that if Selena wants to leave the music industry, she should do it on her own accord, not because of what others opinionated.  

 Selena Gomez remarks that it is hard for others to view her as more than a Disney child actress. Since she was young, she has had to be a role model for younger children. She states, “You’re considered a figure kids look up to, and they take that seriously there.”   

 She says that at the age of 15, the paparazzi started taking pictures of her. Her cast members from Wizards of Waverly Place were protective of her, but there were limits they could not cross because the paparazzi wants a response from the actors. She was not aware of how these situations were a breach of her privacy. “I’m just such a people pleaser,” she says. 

Gomez’s fans globally hope that she continues with her music career. She will make her decision after releasing her next album.
