Learning To Lead: 2021 Community Service Workshop

The annual Community Service Student Coordinator Workshop took place on Saturday, August 7 at the Science Park campus. Led by Mr. Cheung, the workshop was attended by the new coordinators of this year’s community service (CS) clubs. In order to teach CS coordinators about leadership, teamwork, CS expectation at AISG, and other important elements, the jampacked day incorporated activities, presentations, and guest lectures.

To begin with, Mr. Cheung reviewed the student meeting rules and norms, asking for the opinion of CS leaders. Some of the prominent ideas raised were to have CS members actively participate during the meeting, follow the agenda and tasks assigned, and listen attentively to the coordinator(s). Following this brief yet impactful discussion, the group began to break down the norms, rules, and missions that they want to follow in their own CS clubs.

Next up on the agenda was leadership—an essential part of becoming a CS coordinator. Throughout this presentation, Mr. Cheung emphasized the importance of CS leaders “walking beside” the members, because a good leader motivates others and values teamwork.

Afterward, the group came together to evaluate project planning. Since many CS groups host and operate fundraisers, sales, and events, Mr. Cheung introduced the elements of project planning. To further elaborate on the importance of event planning, he brought forward Tania Walla, the PTA president, who highlighted taking advantage of PTA events (Family Fun Day, Holiday Bazaar, and International Day) to raise money and spread awareness for CS groups.

Reflecting on the community service workshop, Mr. Cheung noted that “the goal was to prep [student coordinators] to start meetings well, and give them the tools and tips.” Asked about his vision for future CS events, Mr. Cheung elaborated upon “meaningful and powerful events that truly reflect a group’s mission rather than simply fundraising.”

As an attendee of the recent workshop and the new Connect4Cancer co-coordinator, Sharon C. stated that she “felt motivated to brainstorm new ideas for fundraisers and events” and “learned new tactics to incentivize students and help them engage with Connect4Cancer’s goals.”
