It’s been a long ride since the beginning of the school year and we’re almost at the finish line. From what I’ve seen, pretty much everyone—including me!—is ready to be done with school and cannot wait for summer. Personally, I’m mostly looking forward to not having to wake up early in the morning. But right now at the end of the year, academics are getting harder, so waiting for summer cannot mean slacking. We all have to give it our best and finish the year strong—but that doesn’t mean we can’t think about the happiness to come.
Here are some thoughts from a few AISG students about the last weeks of school left:
Eleventh-grade student Punya Bhargava is excited for the last few weeks of school because “that means summer is getting close, and I feel like we have gotten through the first year of IB so I’m kind of proud of all of us.” She added, “Other than the fear of upcoming exams, summer plans are the one thing that is keeping me going.” She’s looking forward to going to Africa for a UN internship, and can’t wait to help children in need, and meet the interesting people she’ll be working for. She concluded, “Mostly the fun part of it all is that I am traveling within continents and it will be a great experience because I’m doing it all by myself.”
When I interviewed another eleventh-grader, Hannah, she said, “Summer means no school and no homework, so, therefore, summer is good and it cannot be here soon enough. We still have thirty days left, but we are nearly there.” She added that she’ll be working for most of the summer and with any other spare time, she’ll be relaxing and enjoying family time.
Ninth grader Pierce Jullian added his plans. In addition to sleeping more and traveling in Europe with his friends and family, he’ll be “doing some soccer camps in France with some old friends to try and reconnect with them.” Like most of us, he’s extremely excited to take a break from anything school-related.
Globetrotting to faraway continents, spending summer with family members who are distant during the school year, or just sitting in the sun and forgetting that the IB and summative assessments exist—in general, knowing that it’s finally almost time to take a break from school is amazing. Let’s hope the tantalizing thoughts about what’s just around the corner will help us summon up a last burst of energy for our final exams.
