On September 12, Roots and Shoots Animals volunteered at a local animal shelter here in Guangzhou. Members and volunteers, along with the aid of Ms. Zhang and Mr. Cheung, rotated around the shelter, cleaning rooms and feeding the animals.
Roots and Shoots: Animals were surprised when they arrived at the shelter because the shelter was a huge warehouse in surprisingly good condition with a lot of space for the animals. However, with over 50 dogs and only several employees, the environment was littered with animals droppings and bugs. Roots and Shoot: Animals went into each room spraying and scrubbing the floor down to the best of their abilities.
“The shelter was very big and spacious which is a good environment for the dogs, I first thought that it would be really easy helping out there until because I have a dog but as soon as I saw the sheer number of dogs and how dirty the environment was, I realized I was mistaken,” said Arielle L., a freshman in AISG.
“Anyone can participate in a community service, and when you help a life with your own hands, the experience feels very unique and super rewarding,” said Ayan., a junior at AISG.
The shelter housed a large number of wild dogs and some cats, although the breed of animals at the shelter were vast, most of the animals that members saw were mixed breeds. Mixed Breeds are found in pet stores often therefore the shelter assumes that most of the dogs they house are wild dogs instead of lost or abandoned dogs.
