Elon Musk has recently been tweeting about his plan to “unlock the potential of Twitter”. He says he may charge third parties to embed tweets, as well as potentially charging businesses and governments for tweets.

Musk stated that Twitter will always be available for casual users but “may incur a small fee for commercial/government users”. Musk’s $44 billion bid to buy Twitter was accepted in late April of this year.

Little is known about Musk’s plans to speed up the social media network’s development. He has said that free speech on the platform is crucial, and he is expected to slash Twitter’s moderation policy. Recent reports of his private discussions with banks suggest the tech giant has developed new ways to make money from tweets that contain important information or go viral, including charging third-party sites to embed or reference verified account’s tweets.

In the statement announcing his acquisition agreement with Twitter, Musk made vague pledges about launching new features and cleansing the platform of spambots.

“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spambots, and authenticating all humans,” Musk said on April 21. “Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Musk had told potential investors that he planned to retake Twitter in just three years. He has been talking to investors who might help finance his $44 billion acquisition, and he plans to take out a loan to cover some of the cost, agreeing to come up with $21 billion himself.
