Family Fun Day was an Amazing Kickstart for the Following School Events!

 

Family Fun Day took place on Saturday, August 27 at the Ersha Campus of AISG. The event was held by AISG and was made up of many different booths run by students or the PTA of AISG, as well as food vendors.  

The AISG community service booths present at Family Fun Day included Roots and Shoots People-Animal-Environment, Connect4Cancer, Girls-Boys Scouts, Elder Care, GSA, GenCo 9-12, Heart to Heart, HSU, NCHS, IToD, GIN, Crossroads, Pulse, Migrant Link and Athletic Council. These booths held different games to help fundraise for future events or organizations they support, and many local restaurants were at the event as food vendors such as OGGI and Mado. 

One of the booths at Family Fun Day was Roots and Shoots Environment, which is raising money for future events and a rooftop garden on campus. Roots and Shoots Environment’s goal is to improve how much the AISG community recycles, reduces, and reuses, as well as to teach younger students the importance of keeping the environment clean. 

 The booth held a game for organizing trash, where there were reused water bottles that had labels with a little bit of water and orbeez to give the bottles weight and a reused cardboard box divided into four sections with the labels: plastic, paper, cans and others. The goal of the game was to put the water bottle into the section of the box that has the same bottle from a bit of a distance to make it a challenge. 

The game showed younger students how to correctly sort their trash by what the label said, and the activity was a success as it drew many students over and was a step closer to their goal. One of their goals is the rooftop garden, it will be used to grow vegetables that can be given to nursing homes and homeless shelters as well as teach students how to grow their own vegetables. 

The mission statement of roots and shoots environment states: “We are slowly destroying the environment and the earth. As citizens of earth, we want to continue living our lives on this planet and create a viable future for our future generations and other inhabitants of the earth.” 

“If we collected over 30 bottles of plastic just within our group, how many bottles does the whole AISG community use?” Elsie Z., a junior at AISG and a member of the roots and shoots environment said. 

 Another booth present during Family Fun Day was GSA, the Gender and Sexuality Association, which is raising money for organizations that support the LGBTQ+ community as well as bringing awareness to the LGBTQ+ community by themselves. Members of the club learn about what it means to be an ally and about themselves. 

The goal of the group is “to educate the student body, create a safe space, and spread awareness throughout the community,” said Max N., a senior at AISG and a member of GSA. 

“I really enjoyed Family Fun Day because it feels like a break from school because we just had to focus on running our booths and enjoying the day being there,” said Shunma R., a sophomore at AISG and an attendee. 

This year’s Family Fun Day will be a hard one to follow with its wide range of fun activities from community service booths and foods, although there were a few suggestions from attendees. Family Fun Day was a huge event and a great kick-start to the school year, however, there were some overcrowding issues that some students believe can be fixed if next year’s event has more space.
