On Saturday and Sunday, September 3rd and 4th Stephen Curry – one time NBA champion, two times MVP, three times all star, and current record holder for the most three pointers in an NBA season – visited Guangzhou as part of his Asia tour sponsored by Under Armour.
Curry was on the Asia tour for two years consecutively, but it was his first time in Guangzhou. He started his Asia tour on September 2nd in Shenyang, and made his way to Guangzhou afterwards. He was met by a throng of fans outside a local Guangzhou hotel at around 1:40 Pm on Saturday. Security had to push back on the eager fans hoping to get Curry’s autograph as Curry was entering his car.
Leaving the hotel, Curry made his way to Guangzhou University to help instruct a basketball clinic with some of the city’s best players. His clinic opened up with Curry’s signature dribbling warm up, which has became almost as famous as his ridiculous long range shooting. Thousands of students waited outside during the clinic, hoping to get a glimpse of the two- time-reigning MVP. As the crowd chanted his name, Curry decided to open up the doors and let the fans see him.
Curry popped his head through the sunroof as he left for the Asian Games Sports Stadium in Guangzhou for a special event. After he met with children from Jet Li’s One Foundation, he made his way back to the university to coach a game with the eleven best players that he had selected earlier from the clinic. When his team was down, Curry jumped in and hit 3 consecutive three pointers, giving his team a 19-18 win.
Approximately 1500 people were at Curry’s departure in Guangzhou. He made his way to Hong Kong and Taipei to end his Asia tour.
