Are You Aware of Roots and Shoots?

Three weeks ago, November 10th was the date of Roots and Shoots Awareness Day. For those of you who still do not know what Roots and Shoots is, it is an in-school community service group with three branches: People, Environment, and Animals.

All three groups prepared extensively for the event. Members brainstormed ideas on how to spread the message of Roots and Shoots. One of the coordinators of R&S People, Nancy Peng (12), said: “I’m glad to see an increase in the number of members in the Roots and Shoots groups this year. We came up with the idea of Awareness Day to create a fun school-wide event that doubles as a reminder of what our groups are all about.” The hope of the three groups is that this will become an AISG tradition and an annual event. Here is what the groups did for November 10th: during homeroom, gift-bearing members of the Roots and Shoots groups visited each homeroom and asked trivia questions. If students answered correctly, a lollipop and a raffle ticket were awarded.

On the day of the event, students were seen walking around with blue, green, and pink wristbands. However, there was a lack of signatures on the posters posted around the school walls. After the day was over, R&S People coordinator Nancy Peng said: “Since this was our first time doing this, there were many problems with logistics, which I think the groups can solve next year with further planning.” According to Peng, most members did their parts but due to time constraints, some details were overlooked. The Roots & Shoots groups hope that next year they can develop this day in to something bigger and better.
