Newly packed with trench coat choruses and more interesting characters, the AISG 2015 high school musical Adrift in Macao is ready to dazzle both Rams and invited guests.
Adrift in Macao is a satirical musical that makes fun of typical movie clichés. If you are a fan of cheesiness, you will be surprised at the lampoons made on your favourite pieces, whereas others could simply laugh at the jokes.
The newly added choruses will provide a much more resonant sound to this year’s musical. Comprised of five talented singers dressed in romantic trench coats, the chorus will work along with the band on the background to make the musical more rich in sound. The addition of the trench coat chorus will hopefully substitute the talented singers who left last year.
The cast, similar to last year’s, will have four main characters, none of whom is a truly inimical villain. All characters will contribute to forging the plot in a comical way.
The plot of Adrift in Macao is not very well known, but such unpopularity might be why Mr. Boyd chose the play. The play has some unexpected scenes and moments which could potentially amuse narrow-targeted groups in the audience.
Most actors of the main cast are completely new to the high school musical. Other than senior Pippa Rous, who has been the lead actress since last year, the main cast of Han Tay, Jonty Davies and Gloria Huang is formed of newcomers to the musical. As such, albeit less experienced, they will certainly bring a fresh and energetic feeling to this year’s performance.
Yiu Wai Yuen, who plays the piano for the musical this year, says, “I did not know that so many people were enduring such onerous practice so as to make the musical perfect.” The efforts of not only the main cast but also those of the chorus and the band are the essentials for a perfect high school musical.
The high school musicals at AISG for the past few years have been comedies. Though some may be bored at the limited genre selection, comedy would probably be the best type of genre considering the variety of age groups that would come to watch.
AISG students could also invite guests from outside of school. As the weather subtly turns from warm to chilly in November, it certainly would be great to enjoy a cosy yet lively musical with your family and friends.
