On Saturday, April 22, AISG held our annual International Day at the Ersha Campus.
Food is definitely one of the most important things for a special day like International Day. At AISG, we set up a number of booths which sold food from different countries and cultures such as the bean curd jelly from the Chinese booth, poutine from the Canadian booth, Kimchi pancake from the Korean booth and many other delicious foods.
Other than the appetizing food that was being sold at International Day, there were also many activities that people could participate in. Our community service groups hosted mini games, prizes, and raffles. The money we earned through community service was donated to people living in poverty. There was Crossroad’s Ring Toss, High School Union’s Bracelet Making and Jail Run, Roots and Shoots Animals’ Guessing the Drink, and student council’s Pulling the String.
Some people noticed that the American food booth sold Mexican food as well, so I went around asking if it was appropriate. I interviewed Cathy Zuo and she said that selling Mexican food in the American Booth is quite creative because it emphasizes our school’s multi-cultural background to visitors and the peace and friendly communications between Mexico and the U.S. Since Mexico is located on the continent of North America, there is a huge population of Mexicans within the U.S. Their culture has had a strong influence in the U.S. The most obvious influence to the U.S. is the food culture since there are many taco lovers all over the country.
AISG International Day was successful in creating a better school community. Not only people did enjoy their participation in games and buying cultural foods, but children living in poverty also receive new tables and resources using the money earned from International Day. We look forward to repeating the success of International Day for everyone next year.
