Introducing The Beacon’s New Playlist of the Month!

This playlist was compiled in collaboration by Sophie Morais and Prerna Kanji. 

Introducing the new monthly segment of the beacon – Playlist of the Month! We will compile some songs we think our AISG community will enjoy and make a playlist on Spotify. Feel free to follow The Beacon on Spotify and any playlists you like! Our first edition will be Summer 2017 featuring some of the best hits of the summer and our personal favourites. Stay tuned for future playlists and for some superb recommendations. Enjoy!

• Why we like it: It’s got an amazing electronic dance section following an awesome beat drop.

2. Praying

• Artist: Kesha Sebert is a singer and songwriter from the United States.
• Genre: Pop
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Hymn – Kesha
• Why we like it: Praying is different than Kesha’s previous music with a deeper meaning that makes the listener reflect on what they are hearing.

3. Perfect Places

• Artist: Lorde  (Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor) is a 20 year old singer-songwriter from New Zealand.
• Genre: Alternative
• Rating:⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Omen – Disclosure ft. Sam Smith
• Why we like it: Perfect Places features Lorde’s classic yet unique lyrics.

4. Old Friends (Remix by Jonas)

• Artist: Guy James Robin (Jonas Blue) is an English DJ who remixes different genres of music; especially dance. Jasmine Thompson is a British singer-songwriter and is only 16 years old.
• Genre: Pop
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Old Friends – Jasmine Thompson
• Why we like it: This is a great song because there are components that are rather slow but then when the beat drops it becomes livelier and much more entertaining to listen to.

5. TG4M

• Artist: Zara Larsson is a Swedish singer-songwriter. She is only 19 years old.
• Genre: Pop
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Habits of My Heart – Jaymes Young
• Why we like it: It has an upbeat, fun feel; perfect for the summer!

6. Fast Car – Radio Edit by Jonas Blue

• Artist: We spoke about Jonas Blue above, but he is an English DJ who mixes different genres of music to make them more up-beat. Tracy Chapman is an American singer-songwriter and is 53 years old.
• Genre: Dance/Electronic
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️  
• If you like this, try this: Dancing on My Own – Calum Scott
• Why we like it: This is a fairly old song but it’s a very entertaining song to listen to in the summer especially with the exciting new beat!

7. Friends 

• Artist: Justin Bieber & BloodPop®. Justin Bieber is a canadian singer-songwriter. BloodPop® (Michael Tucker) is a 27 year old record producer, musician and songwriter from the United States.
• Genre: Pop
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Raincoats – Guard
• Why we like it: It’s got the new Justin Bieber pop feel with a catchy chorus.

8. The Ocean

• Artist: Mike Perry (Mikael Persson) is a 34 year-old Swedish DJ. Shy Martin was the featured vocalist on this song and is a 23-year old singer also from Sweden.
• Genre: Pop
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Final Song – MØ
• Why we like it: This song wasn’t released too long ago but it is super catchy and reminds us all of the beach and it’s an awesome song to dance to!

9. Friend of Mine

• Artist: Avicii and Vargas & Lagola. Avicii (Tim Bergling) is a 27 year old DJ and remixer from Sweden. Vargas & Lagola (Vincent Pontare) is a 37 year old singer-songwriter from Sweden.
• Genre: Dance
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Feels Like Home – Sam Feldt, Dante Klein, and Milow
• Why we like it: It’s somewhat unique to much of Avicii’s previous stuff. It doesn’t have that pounding electronic feeling until the chorus.

10. Havana

• Artist: Camila Cabello is an American-Cuban singer who departed from her group Fifth Harmony and started her solo career this year. She is 20 years old.
• Genre: Pop
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Secrets – The Weekend
• Why we like it: This song has no beat drop but it has rap and singing and the more you listen to this song, the better it gets!

11. Silence

• Artist: Marshmello ft. Khalid. Marshmello (thought to be Chris Comstock) is an anonymous EDM producer and DJ. Khalid is an alternative and R&B singer-songwriter from the United States.
• Genre: Dance
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Feel Good – Gryffin and Illenium ft. Daya
• Why we like it: Silence is amazing because it has the classic soulful feeling in Khalid’s voice matched with EDM backings.

12. Netflix Trip

• Artist: AJR is an indie-pop and electro band composed of brothers: Adam, Jack, and Ryan Met.
• Genre: Pop
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Weak – AJR
• Why we like it: Netflix Trip is exactly the kind of music AJR fans love and it features “The Office,” a TV show we all love.

• Artist: Axwell (Axel Christofer Hedforsis) is a Swedish DJ who used to be a member of Swedish House Mafia with Sebastian Ingrosso.
• Genre: Dance/Electronic
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Safe and Sound – Capital Cities
• Why we like it: This song has an incredible beat and dancing and singing along is such a blast!

14. Shangri-La

• Name: Shangri-La
• Artist: Caitlyn Scarlett is a pianist, guitarist, and singer from the U.K. She is only 18 years old.
• Genre: Alternative
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Human, Being – Caitlyn Scarlett
• Why we like it: It has a distinctive hook and beat drop.

15. Neverland

• Artist: Drumaq (Drew MacDonald) is a 22 year old Canadian singer.
• Genre: Pop
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Her (Loving You) – Glades
• Why we like it: Drumaq’s voice is so satisfying and it really makes a difference.

16. Location

• Artist: Khalid is 19 years old and is from the United States. His singing-songwriting career began in 2015 and he has already had songs on Billboard Hot 100.
• Genre: R&B
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: American Teen – Khalid
• Why we like it: Super catchy song with a slow beat but is also a great song to listen to in the summer and think about friends.

17. Bad Liar

• Artist: Selena Gomez is a singer and actress from the US.
• Genre: Pop
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Pink – Julia Michaels
• Why we like it: It has a simple musical backing and it is mostly focused on the lyrics. Also, we love Selena’s voice!

18. Indian Summer

• Artist: Jai Wolf (Sajeeb Saha) is an electronic producer based in New York and is from Bangladesh.
• Genre: Dance/Electronic
• Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
• If you like this, try this: Sunset Lover – Petit Biscuit
• Why we like it: There are no words in this song, but it’s super up beat as well so much fun to dance and move around to during the summer!
