Humans of AISG

Every AISG community member is a world in miniature, full of unique stories, perspectives, and ideas. But how much do we know about these worlds we spend our days surrounded by? Humans of AISG (inspired by the Humans of New York website) is the Beacon’s new feature, intended to introduce you to some of the stories—small and large, strange or simple—you may not know about.

Our first featured Human of AISG is eleventh grader Yujin Shin. She spoke to us about a strange memory from her childhood, and the neighborhood of her youth in Korea.

“It’s one of my earliest memories. Once, when I was 4, I was sleeping on a tricycle… I think I was playing around with my friends near my grandma’s house, but then I got tired, so I just slept on the tricycle in front of the house. All the neighbors were really familiar, so it wasn’t dangerous. They weren’t relatives, but it felt like it, because they cared about me a lot, they made food for me… my favorite was Korean noodles. I kind of miss it.

“I woke up after a while and I noticed that my family was crowding around me. I was confused. They told me that while I was asleep, the tire of a truck was parked on my foot, surprisingly I wasn’t injured. Even as my grandmother called the driver of the truck, I stayed calm. I was so tired that I didn’t even realize this had happened!”

[Thinking about this memory] makes me feel really weird, because I don’t think other people are like that any more, and it’s really hard to find that kind of neighborhood. [What you can tell from this memory is,] I think, I’m not sensitive. I’m really not aware of new changes, or not careful… I don’t take care of my stuff carefully, so [I lose it all] really easily.”
