A question that you’re always asked once you come out of quarantine is “How was quarantine?” or “How bad was it?” Quarantine wasn’t a common topic to talk about before Covid-19 had started but now this topic is all the rage.
I had gone to Shanghai thinking that it would be a safe and easy trip but it turned out to be a surprise quarantine vacation! It wasn’t a big surprise when I was first told I’d be in quarantine because I know the drill…if someone came into your hotel or came in contact with you and they were a possible Covid case then you’re automatically in quarantine…even if someone just walks by you, you need to get a Covid test.
The situation that I was in was that the person who was the positive covid case or possible covid case checked out of the hotel the day I checked in. He had come in contact with over 1000 people in Shanghai which led them to all needing to do a 14-day quarantine which didn’t make a lot of people happy. I was told that I would be in a 14-day quarantine on January 1 and I had, thankfully, returned to Guangzhou with no problems besides the fact that I needed to get about 5 Covid tests.
If you’re ever in a surprise quarantine l then here are some tips to get you through this difficult process
Tip 1: Always bring snacks or order snacks. This is said without hesitation because some people could be vegetarian or vegan and the hotel that you’re staying at might not have many vegan products to give. So always bring snacks, just in case!
Tip 2: Before going anywhere…always bring a laptop just in case. Due to the mindset of thinking there was no way a surprise 14-day quarantine could happen…I chose to only bring my IPad instead of my laptop which led it to be more difficult to be able to connect to meetings and to do homework.
Tip 3: If the wifi is bad at the hotel that you’re quarantined at then try to use your phone’s hotspot.
Tip 4: Always keep yourself posted on how many Covid cases or what kind of risk (low risk, medium risk, or high risk) before you plan to go. Even though Shanghai was a low-risk district …it turned into a medium risk by the time quarantine ended.
In my opinion, this quarantine wasn’t as bad as my first quarantine considering that I was at a nice hotel and I had many snacks but these are some of the tips that I wish I knew before I had gone to Shanghai. I hope these tips are helpful and that you don’t end up in a surprise quarantine…safe travels!
