A Shift In Female Rappers’ Spotlight: Nicki Minaj to Cardi B?

• Bookmarks: 281373

The title of RAP QUEEN has been carefully secured in the hands of “Anaconda” and “Starships” singer Nicki Minaj since 2010, but is it high time for her to hand down the crown?

Cardi B, the 2018 breakthrough artist of Billboard’s No. 1 hit “Bodak Yellow” and No. 1 album Invasion of Privacy, recently threw major shade at Nicki Minaj during this month’s MTV VMA Awards. The night was packed with amazing performances, shocking surprises, and a room full of talented artists, along with two rap queens of the century seated at opposite sides of the front row.

While Nicki Minaj continues to flourish in the musical industry– releasing her latest album Queen and claiming Best Hip-Hop Video Award at the VMAs Cardi B has quickly released record-breaking tracks and has been topping the charts nonstop since the beginning of last year. Recently named Top Rap Female Artist at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards and Best New Artist at the 2018 VMAs, Cardi B is both a feminine force and an icon of the new age. Most will know her by her signature catchphrase Okurrrrrrrttttt! and her famous collabs with hip-hop artists G-Eazy, Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, Migos, etc. With her “swag” attitude and “I Like It” demeanor, Cardi B has brought forward something new and something exciting to every song she has ever created.

“I would choose Cardi B because she’s very real. Nicki Minaj… not that she’s a bad artist, but she’s just kind of old. I like Cardi B because she’s new, and her personality is very funny,” commented Amanda D, a senior at AISG.

With the supposed threat of Cardi B coming into the modern Hollywood spotlight, ‘old’ and ‘traditional’ rap queen Nicki Minaj seemed to have shrunk in the likeliness of some fans, burdened by the media’s accusations and the over-exaggerating tabloids. While Nicki Minaj faces downfall in defending her title of RAP QUEEN, Cardi B remarks that “this is only the beginning of my career.”
