AISG Community Service: Productive?

• Bookmarks: 32768

At AISG, there are a variety of community services for students to chose from. From Connect 4 Cancer to GIN, there is an activity for everyone. Most services at our school try to help other communities. For example, Habitat for Humanity organizes semester trips to build houses for rural Chinese citizens. Other groups, for instance, Connect 4 Cancer do less physical work, but instead, raise money with fundraisers to donate to cancer patients, such as the children with cancer from the Children’s Hope Foundation. Overall, community service groups are positively affecting the communities around AISG.

However, because there are many members in these service groups, work may not be evenly distributed, meaning that some people may not have any work to do. Many people attend community service only to go on their phones and chat with their friends instead of helping people. Robbie H. says that “When I go to community service meetings, there is only a small amount of work for me to do.” He also sees many other people on YouTube and not being productive.

Here are some things that we can do:

Have an assignment list

Having a name list can help distribute work evenly throughout a group’s members. A name list can help the coordinators mark who doesn’t have any work to do, and give them assignments.

Make a website for signing up

A website is key to evenly distributing work amongst members. An example of this is The Beacon’s own Etherpad. Basically, it is a page where members can sign up for their work. This could for community service groups as after signing up, the coordinators would be able to see who hasn’t signed up and assign them work.

Although some people are unproductive in their after school meetings, overall, community service is helpful to the communities around AISG. We can help them even more if all members start contributing more.
