New year, new season for volleyball! Last year at APAC, both boys’ and girls’ teams played with unprecedented skill and an all-in mentality, making it deep into their playoff brackets and placing second and third respectively.
“It’s a reawakening,” said Lisa M. Both teams have lost most of their veterans due to last year’s seniors graduating, leaving a huge gap for seniors Brandon L., Kevin L., Lisa M., and Bonny C. to fill up. Sophomore Victoria Y. commented that in previous seasons, younger players benefitted tremendously by watching the more experienced players on the court.
Both teams have received many new, young talented players that can assuredly contribute to success in the future. There are 8 new talents joining the boys’ team this year: Anthony W., Nelson W., Leo C., Sanshiro M., Andy C., Max N., Jacky L., and Issac N. Brandon L. says that, “our team is young, and this year I want to make the team like family — a brotherhood.” The girl’s team has equally acquired young talents, including: Sophia P., May L., Rafaela O., Mindy Y., Gwynnie G., Chih-Hsuan C., and Leiah A. They are all “girls with potential [and] assets to the team,” says Lisa M.
Champions in GISAC, Tri-Cities, and APAC tournaments are just some of the goals that the teams are striving for. “[We want] to make a winning culture in the AISG volleyball team.” Says Brandon L. He also commented about what the mindset during tournaments should be. “[We] won’t give up on any possession whether we are winning 24-0 or losing 24-0.” This is a type of mindset that all winning teams have, from high school sports to the professional leagues. Bonny C. is very optimistic and excited for the future, claiming, “We have good communication and players that work hard,” and as the old saying goes, hard work pays off.
