AISG’s 22 proud SEOMUN XVIII delegates have just arrived home, from a week of working hard, and playing hard. After weeks of preparation, it came as no surprise that the SEOMUN conference was a success for everyone. SEOMUN was hosted by Korea International School, at COEX convention center in Seoul’s Gangnam district.
“SEOMUN was fresh, as it was our first year [at SEOMUN]. It gives our school an opportunity to produce chairs”, said Junior Jiwon Lee, referring to chairmanship, the position of authority in (Model) United Nations conferences.
This year’s SEOMUN conference was quite significant, being held on the actual UN’s 70th anniversary, and just a few weeks from the November 13 Paris attacks, which wholly got the world’s attention. It most certainly affected the debates, especially since some of AISG’s delegates were representing the very nation of France. During debate days, SEOMUN’s Secretary General made a show of being “kidnapped” by other KIS delegates dressed as IS militants. Delegates, in many committees were then forced to come up with a resolution in 2 hours, in order to ensure the safe return of SEOMUN’s SG.
Punya Bhargava, representing France in the Advisory Panel. She main-submitted a resolution on refugee boats, which passed.
Many speeches at this conference, had powerful, compelling arguments regarding human rights, since this year’s theme was “Freedom from Fear”. In General Assembly II, many discussions revolved on whether whistleblowing protects these freedoms, or attacks them.
Now, to wait for BEIMUN(March 9-12 2016)…
