Traveling out of China and into Hanoi, Vietnam, both our boys and girls Varsity Basketball team competed in their final tournament of the season. This year APAC took place during Chinese New Year break from January 22nd to January 26th. The schools which participated were: AISG, Brent International School of Manila (BRENT), Seoul Foreign School (SFS), Shanghai American School Puxi (SASPX), United Nations International School (UNIS), and Western Academy of Beijing (WAB).
Going into APAC, both teams were as ready as they could be. Facing BRENT and SASPX, two of the strongest teams at APAC, the girls played relentlessly on court. Staring APAC off strongly, the girls’ hard work paid off as they beat BRENT 47-39. Unfortunately, the girls were not able to beat SAS, their head to head opponent. The boys, similarly to the girls, faced two of the top teams at APAC: SAS and SFS. The boys fought hard each possession and play but were not able to beat the two elite schools. With these results, the teams went into the second day stronger. The boys had an edging fight against BRENT in the morning, chasing them back and forth with some tremendous game turners. Bringing in the same energy into the game against WAB, the boys earned their first win at APAC. The girls dominated the court and pulled another 2 win against WAB and UNIS, placing them at the top of the food chain.
Both the teams were ready to go into their third and final day. While the boys were up against UNIS, the girls competed against SFS. Beating these two schools would place them into championships and the 3v4th place match. Playing the last schools, both the teams earned another win. This set both the teams into a good position as the boys were placed in the 3v4th place match and the girls had the opportunity to play in the championships. The girls were extremely pumped to be able to play in a championship match once again (the most recent being 2014). As a member of the team, I am proud to say all our hard work paid off.
The results from APAC were phenomenal. Our boys had a breathtaking 3v4 place game against BRENT and edged them until the very last second. Our girls had a thrilling game fighting side by side for first place against SASPX. Although both teams were not able to defeat their opponents, our boys took home 4th and our girls took home 2nd and sportsmanship!
A huge congratulations to our basketball teams and our All APAC Players:
Ryan Chiang (12), Steven Eng (11), Rachel Lo (12), Wei Qian Lim (12) and Becky Renfrow (10)
