Are Your Study Habits Effective?

• Bookmarks: 471606

This article was written before we reassessed our recent interviews and decided to seek more diverse interviews. The Beacon sincerely apologises for not reaching out to more students, but future articles will include a much broader range of AISG student opinions.

Finals are coming up in approximately 3 weeks, and typically this means that you are stressed and sleep deprived. Juniors and seniors have the immediate thought that they will fail IB. As you get older, the rigor of exams increases as you are not only being tested on one semester, but instead a whole year’s work. In the case of IB, it can range from a semester to 2-3 semesters. One of the most crucial things regarding finals is having an effective study plan and knowing your learning style. This allows for you to be successful, while also minimizing your studying time! I asked a couple of students from different grade levels regarding their study habits.

Grade 12: Grade 12 student Jacky L. jokingly said, “I wait till the last minute and then begin cramming in everything I can”. As a senior, this isn’t a surprise. The amount of summative and projects is overwhelming!

Grade 11: Megan H., a Junior, mentioned that she makes flashcards prior to the test or assignment. She added, “I review all study guides and textbooks.” As an IBHL Biology student, this is extremely necessary.

Grade 10: Prerna K., a sophomore at AISG, mentioned that her studying habits for each subject differ. For Social Studies, she said, “I usually just write everything down that I think I need to know” whilst in math, she says she reviews all her past review sheets.

Grade 9: A freshman who didn’t want to be named said, “I tend to not study at all, which may explain as to why I have a C in the class.”

Although this article is short, it truly explains a lot in regards to study habits. Although not all interviews are included, I was able to attain that younger students tended to not always study as hard as the demands aren’t as rigorous. As we grow up and step into grade 11 and 12, the pressure of IB kicks in and more studying is necessary.

In regards to finals, it would be beneficial to begin studying 2 weeks prior, or review the learning content in classes. Make sure to understand your learning style, and study in ways that are suitable for you.
