In the last week of January, the APAC Varsity Boys Basketball Team took on top schools at this year’s SUPER APAC. Flying to Seoul, Korea on the 26th of January, the boys would be tested to the limit. All the training and rigorous practices as well as the sacrifices would all come down to the Super APAC at SFS. Playing their very first game against the reigning APAC champions- Shanghai American School of Puxi, the boys would have to bring their A game and heart to the court right after a long journey the day before. As the first game went underway, Puxi came out hitting on all syllables, offense and defense was at full alert. Our boys wouldn’t step back and came out with all the answers. However, against the champs are boys would receive their first loss. Playing their second game of the day against the hosts, SFS would take home court advantage and stop the Rams from getting their first victory in APAC. Coming off of 2 losses on the first day, the Rams would have to step up their game against Brent coming in from Manila. “The 2 losses on the first day did not really hurt us. We came out ready to play Friday with a win over Brent International School of Manila.” said sophomore Andrew Renfrow. With their season on the brink and their pride on the edge of the cliff, AISG hit the ground running, putting the pressure on Brent all game long with which they would take their first victory and march into the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Puxi would meet the Rams again. This time they were mentally ready to come out and put up a fight, whether it was to lose or win, they weren’t going to back down. Following along with the title-holders all game long, few key plays from AISG’s Steven Eng in the final minutes would force the game into overtime. OT would go back and forth until Puxi stepped on the pedal beating the Rams by a mere 4 points! With a chance to finish 5th at Super APAC, ISB would be standing in our way. It wasn’t about the winning but the pride that was at stake. Determined to finish in the top 5, ISB would need to play with everything they had. With the goal in sight and the finish line close by, the boys would leave nothing behind, giving their best against the ISB Dragons. The Rams never fail to prove to other teams how much they have improved since past years, taking the win against ISB would give them just that. Coming in 5th out of 12 schools would mean of the best seasons for AISG Varsity Boys Basketball. Senior Tommy Lu exclaimed “The tournament was simply amazing. The competition was insane. Buzzer beaters after buzzer beaters. It was honestly the best APAC I’ve ever been to.”
When asked what message he had for the new team coming in next year, Alex Wang says “To continue our legacy, and continue to make AISG history. But most importantly, to have fun and enjoy the ride while it lasts.”
“I must say that our team statistically wise might not have met all of our goals but the level of play and commitment to getter better along with overcoming challenges throughout the season; we certainly met up to this and as a result of our teams hard work we placed 5th in Super APAC after playing many close games against top caliber teams this year” said Jeremy Eng
Team captain Andrew Elliott proudly says “This was one of the best years of basketball for nearly every team at APAC so the competition was tough but AISG is just as good as any of the elite APAC schools and we showed everyone that.”
