Beijing Model United Nations (BEIMUN) sponsored by the International School of Beijing(ISB). BEIMUN XXIII was held from March 9th to Saturday March 12th, 2016 at the Sun Palace Crowne Plaza in Beijing, China and AISG delegates participated in the twenty-third session of the annual event. BEIMUN is a THIMUN- affiliated conference, and is open to all high school aged students. This conference has served as one of the leading Model United Nations conferences in North Asia for more than twenty years, attracting up to 500 delegates coming from all around the world. Each MUN conference held anywhere has a theme , and this year the theme of BEIMUN XXIII was “Identity in the 21st Century“. The idea behind each theme presented in conferences always reflect current world issues in order to allow delegates to debate through issues and crises in all forums in relation to the overall theme.

To provide background, MUN is a Model United Nations group often consisting in majority of international schools. The purpose of this community of students is to become educated regarding real-world issues ranging from environment to refugees all the way to nuclear warfare and have the ability to collaborate with students all around the world (who themselves have their own unique background) representing nations not affiliated with themselves in order to find solutions. The opportunity allows students to not only make lifelong friends, but also improve their public speaking skills, their general knowledge and even highlight college applications.

The trip was one of the most memorable experience for all the students that attended. From the moment of landing , due to the flight delay everyone was unable to eat lunch therefore the students ended up strolling the old streets of the forbidden city starved but momentarily forgotten due to the vibrant colors, enthusiasm of all friends collected in one area with the ability to finally experience a significant monument of the country they reside in collectively together. Throughout the streets only the voices of the RAMS could be heard and more than a few heads turned towards the students that created such a hype , ( this behavior was seen throughout the trip and on the way back to Guangzhou we got a threat to be arrested due to noise) (nothing serious of course).  Nonetheless, the trip started off with a bang and it continued all the way to the conferences! We had 2 main submitter speeches done by Ruth Zoe and Eric Tsai, and Co-submitter speech by myself ! All delegates participated wholeheartedly and always seemed to have their placards raised to further stimulate an interesting debate.

Overall, BEIMUN was an unforgettable trip and we hope to see many more delegates represented by the AISG student body in conferences worldwide.
