Kentaro Miura, one of Japan’s most famous mangaka, has recently passed away at the age of 54 on May 6, 2021. The announcement came from his publisher and has elicited grief from manga readers all around the world.
Miura is most well-known for his dark fantasy series ‘Berserk,’ which had debuted in 1989 on the monthly magazine known as Animal House (Now Young Animal). ‘Berserk’ is a journey of revenge following the story of Guts. Berserk is the best-rated manga on Myanimelist.com, with an average rating of 9.37/10.
This much-loved franchise sprouts from Miura’s meticulous storytelling and attention to detail. While many mangaka work by monthly or weekly deadlines, Miura had worked intermittently and pushed back monthly releases many times to dedicate himself to a single panel.
While many stories begin to feel lackluster and dull after several decades, Miura’s ‘Berserk’ is still being published to this day and shows no signs of stopping. Miura’s productions team has promised to continue his legacy and finish ‘Berserk’.
Richie L., a tenth grader in AISGZ and anime enthusiast, said, “I haven’t read much manga; however, I have heard that berserk was an amazing manga, although the anime was terrible.”
Ashanty G., a tenth grader in AISGZ and manga reader, remarked, “I never read ‘Berserk,’ but I saw the images online, and I could tell that the manga had a lot more detail and effort put into its artwork that most other manga just can’t compete with.”
Even for those who are not familiar with ‘Berserk’, it has inspired many fantasy games such as Monster Hunter, the Soul Series, and the famous Buster Sword that Cloud Uses in Final Fantasy XIV.
Miura’s influence on Japan’s anime culture and game culture is unparalleled. The only franchise that rivals this is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures which is impressive in its own ways. While ‘Berserk’ continues, Miura will be deeply missed for his time and effort spent to create one of the best Manga of our time.
