Bonfire Night: What Did People Think?

After-school events that go into the evening are some of the community’s favorites. The talent show and open-mic night are the two events that go into the evening. Every year, everyone looks forward to these events. They are staples of AISG culture and have been routine for the student body. This year, Pulse manage to host one of their most popular events: Bonfire Night.

Similar in many respects to open-mic night, this event was the school community needed direly. With the actual open-mic night being moved to the daytime due to COVID-19 regulations, the event was less than ideal. Many people voiced their disappointment with it purely based off the fact that the daytime atmosphere was not conducive of the mood as it was previously. Bonfire Night taking place later in the year meant that the coronavirus rules were much looser, allowing Pulse to organize a similar event in the nighttime, except with a campfire-themed experience.

“We really just wanted to organize something that everyone would enjoy as much as open-mic night,” said senior Jason P., the coordinator of Pulse. “Honestly, as seniors, we also just wanted to experience that sort of atmosphere at school before graduating.”

The event involved bonfires around the seating area and opportunities for students to toast marshmallows and other sweet foods on them. It was also on the roof, a place that many students had never been to previously. Supplementing this experience were the performances by students on the stage at the front. Just like open-mic, they were allowed to sign up beforehand or just go up whenever no one was on stage. The event ran from 5-7PM, allowing for students to go after they did some sort of after-school activity. However, some students were not as happy about this event timing.

“I really liked the event, but it was really too short. It should have been about three hours and gone into the night so that the experience with the fires could really be enjoyed. When it ended, the night had barely started and people wanted more,” said junior Andrew Z.

Overall, students enjoyed the event a lot, and with a couple welcome changes, bonfire night could be an AISG staple in the future.
