This article was submitted to the Beacon by guest contributors Cindy W and Chantal G, both tenth graders.
All tenth grades are currently doing a project in science focusing on an environmental issue; we decided to focus on deforestation in Indonesia due to the growth of monocultures, specifically palm oil. Deforestation in Indonesia is causing an alarming rate of habitat and biodiversity loss. Known as the largest palm oil producer in the world, Indonesia, along with Malaysia, makes up 85% of the world’s total palm oil exportation. In order to create more room for the planting of oil palm trees, deforestation takes place, and the equivalent of 300 football fields are cleared every hour. We researched how deforestation in Indonesia affects the environment and how humans impact it in order to make a video about it.
Watch the film below and don’t forget to reduce your use of palm oil!
