Christine Amanpour is one of the world’s most famous journalists, with numerous prestigious awards to her name. With CNN she has built an illustrious career by interviewing global leaders and influential figures for the AMANPOUR hour that is aired on CNN every week. But now, she has turned her focus to investigating different world cultures and their take on intimacy, love, and pleasure in an increasingly complex world. In her new CNN Netflix Series: Love & Sex Around the World, Christiane Amanpour travels around the world to interview women about intimacy in their relationships. The TV series consists of a 6-part documentary where Amanpour goes around the designated city to meet and interview regular couples who are living in the culture of modern love in their country. One of the most common questions Amanpour asks them is, “How are roles changing for both men and women when it comes to sex, love, marriage, family, and divorce in your culture?”

The executive producer of the series, the late Anthony Bourdain, commented, “I’ve long been an admirer of Christiane’s brilliant work as a journalist, and was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her on this project. […] Sex and Love Around the World represents some of the best of what CNN Original Series can do.”

Christiane says that the idea for the project came to her about three years ago when she was brushing her teeth and listening to a radio broadcast on Syrian refugee border camps. At that moment she describes that her mind went to wonder about the more intimate questions about the refugee experience that people don’t ask. She asked herself: “How do they maintain their relationships? How do they keep their intimacy? How do they stay human?” It was these questions that she asked herself that led her to starting the 6 episode series in which she travels the world and explores the nuances of modern intimacy and love.

Below is the episode per city order:

Episode 1: Tokyo

Episode 2: Delhi

Episode 3: Beirut

Episode 4: Berlin

Episode 5: Shanghai

Episode 6: Accra

I came across this series when it appeared on my Netflix recommended list over the winter holidays. As a frequent viewer of Amanpour’s show with CNN, I became interested to watch this newly produced series. I found it to be extremely educational and very interesting. I would recommend this series to viewers who enjoy watching documentary-like films that consist of interviews and cultural investigations. Personally, I really enjoyed the series and was very surprised with the way affection is shown across various cultures and how relationships work in them. Christiane Amanpour does a great job interviewing different people among the same community and very fairly presents the opinions and facts she herself learns throughout her journey to these six cities.
