Last week, while we were all working on assignments and preparing for tests, a group of pranksters known as the AISG class of 2017 left the school lockers covered with stupid memes, hallways blocked with beanbags and rows of water cups, and apparently, put film and rubber duckies under the toilet seats in the women’s bathroom.

The seniors stayed up to 8 pm in school Wednesday evening to pull off these organized pranks. This is something of a tradition as we reach the end of the school year. Walking up the stairs to the 1st floor, you could see a collage of all the seniors’ goofy faces, and by the time students reached the 3rd floor, they would quickly realize the originally well-kept school was no longer here.

A common theme in these practical jokes was that they were intended to poke fun at teachers, make them “uncomfortable.” Ibrahim Bah, a senior went around all the teachers’ rooms whether the teacher taught him or not. When he found out that Mr. Baier doesn’t like purple or mangoes, he took the natural next step and “placed purple stuff in his room, and put mangoes everywhere in his room.” He also helped tie up and wrap Mr. Baier’s tennis shoes and rackets and looks forward to Mr. Baier’s surprise.

Similarly, the Beacon meeting room (Mrs.Barga’s room) was covered with pink, a color Mrs. Barga doesn’t like. The couch, tables, walls, and even the telephone and tissue boxes were covered. Pink strings and ribbons were found hanging from the ceiling. When asked about the culprits behind the scenes, Ibrahim said: “It was a collective idea, people all participated differently.” Ruth Zoe contributed by creating the centerpiece, a shrine of books with a baby in the middle. According to her, “[The room] took hours but it was worth it.” She created a book of falsehoods, “Things Mrs.Barga hates,” which she claims was “kind of a sweet gift, showing her that we actually listen in class.”

Mr.Parker, who shares Spiderman’s name, was pranked too, with a giant Spiderman poster taped on the window. He also found a stack of chairs and tables in the middle of his room. On his clock was a meme joking about the teacher’s grading practices, similar to a photoshopped image of Mr.Webster’s face over a wrestler’s body, captioned, “I wrestled between a 3 and a 4.”

Hannah Eng, a senior, seemed to have particularly enjoyed the pranks. She says, “I was really happy how it turned out… It was probably the most fun I’ve had this senior year.” She commented on the success of the event, saying, “Pranks are supposed to be lighthearted and fun, and I think we definitely did that.” She also appreciates the support and encouragement from the teachers, who allowed the event to occur in the first place: “I’m really happy with the administrative people. They were really chill, for the most part.”

Overall, the rows of water cups and the ‘senior snuggle’ (involving seniors lying on beanbags and shouting at passers-by) seemed to be a favorite amongst many seniors. It seems through this event, the school was brought together, evoking a stronger sense of school community. This event came a day after we watched the powerpoint presentation of the universities seniors have accepted offers from, and there seems to be an optimistic tone wherever seniors are mentioned now.
