DC Finally Going in the Right Direction?

Though DC has had its fair share of bad movies throughout the decade, their live-action adaptation of the colorful superheroes, Titans, has been doing well, and audiences are enjoying the path that DC is taking this TV show on.

The first episode of Titans aired on October 12, 2018, with a risky start based on the reviews of the trailer that was released on July 19, 2018. The team behind the Titans TV show are the same group that is behind the CW’s TV shows. These people include Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter. The tone of the Titans is very dark compared to the CW’s TV shows because it includes a bit of swearing and violence. Many may say that the TV show is too dark. However, to fans of DC comics, this is exactly what audiences want from DC, a dark and gritty take on what it would be like if these superheroes lived in our world right now.

Titans is based on a comic book team most commonly known as the Teen Titans. The heroes within the team have changed over the years but DC has chosen to stick to original line up which consists of Robin, Starfire, Beastboy, and Raven, with the exclusion of Cyborg. Titans is about people with supernatural abilities that have their own problems and need each other to feel normal while dealing with enemies who are trying to kill them.

Josh H, a sophomore who reads comics and watches Titans, says, “The new Titans TV show has made me feel many emotions. It made me feel nostalgic, happy, and a little bit angry. It made me feel nostalgic because it brings back all the memories of the original teen titans show, and seeing that DC is making a new tv show, just makes me feel very happy. Although, it makes me a little bit angry because they changed so much to the original. They changed Raven’s name to Rachel, and the storyline is more suited for adults. It also ruins my childhood because in the original series they were all teenagers, and now Robin and Starfire are adults and swear.”

In my opinion, I enjoy watching the Titans TV show because it is a live-action remake of the original Teen Titans cartoon that I used to watch as a kid. I really don’t mind the dark tone DC is taking this TV show because I find it really entertaining and more realistic to the real world. I think this makes the TV show more relatable to audiences. I don’t think this TV show is meant for kids because of the increase in violence in the show.

There have been many controversies over the fact that African American actor, Anna Diop, is playing the orange alien, Starfire. Back in April, when the first pictures of Diop in her costume were released, the internet was immediately outraged with racism and hate speech. Diop’s Instagram and Twitter page were flooded with insulting comments which forced her to shut down her comments section and delete all pictures of herself in her costume.

In conclusion, the Titans TV show is going in the right direction in terms of story-telling and action but is only meant for mature audiences such as teenagers and adults because of the realism of the show.

Comment down below your thoughts on DC’s Titans TV Series. Do you think DC is finally taking a step in the right direction in terms of filmmaking and storytelling? Why or why not?
