Decline of Fortnite

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was arguably the most popular game and at one time had 3.2 million players playing at once. However, all of the success that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds had enjoyed was eventually trumped when Fortnite: Battle Royale was released to the public. Fortnite: Battle Royale grew to become the most popular game in the world, and easily surpassed PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds with 125 million players playing ti in the month of June in 2018.

However, everything that rises must eventually fall, and this is the situation that Fortnite is currently in. Ever since the first few months after Fortnite started gaining popularity, Epic Games seems to have been trying to attract more casual players, instead of appealing to the dedicated players. They have been trying to get rid of skill-based mechanics and appealing more to the casual player. Although this is a good way of increasing profits, if the dedicated players aren’t sticking around, then the game will surely start to die. Dylan W, an avid Fortnite player, says that “the next season for Fortnite is just around the corner, meaning new things will come out, re-attracting many players that have left.” Elom K says that “there is always a new update that refreshes the game and makes the game that much more appealing. I do think that they need to fix some issues such as bloom and making the game more competitive, but I do still love the game.”

Even though some people are still enjoying Fortnite, some people are getting tired of the game. Tyler K, who used to play a lot of Fortnite, says that “Fortnite is dying, it gets repetitive and boring after a while. All the updates don’t fix any issues such as bloom or the number of materials we are able to get, which has been a complaint from the community since the early stages of the game.” Many people who play Fortnite for a living, such as streaming it on Twitch or making videos for YouTube, are also getting tired of the repetitive nature of the game. Streamers such as Ninja and Myth, two extremely popular streamers who make a living off Fortnite, are visibly getting tired of the game. You can visibly see in their streams that they no longer possess the energy and excitement that they once had when playing Fortnite. Like all other games, some people will always not enjoy the game, however, for the people that really love this game, they will stick with it even through times when everyone else in the world seems to hate the game. Fortnite has been the most popular game for months now and doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.
