In a galaxy far, far away, a young man walks through the sandy deserts of an alien planet. However, this is not Star Wars, it is Dune. This movie follows the story of a young man, Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, and his journey to secure the future of his family and people. As conflict erupts over the desert planet’s rare resource spice, his entire nation is wiped out of existence, leaving only him and his mother alive. This first movie explores his journey to escape to safety.
The movie is mediocre at best, while the original 1965 books were original and innovative, the modern movie adaptation just is not the same.
This first film keeps some of the plot complexity from the original books, the character development and characterization from the books just isn’t there. Without all the character development from the books, the characters just seem ridiculous, a set of medieval knights, barons and witches flopping around in the desert, with no real tension or reason behind the fights, it makes fights seem hollow and devoid of emotion.
One thing the film did very well was its cinematography. The scenes are amazing, and while the fight scenes aren’t necessarily the best character wise, they are choreographed amazingly. The cinematography almost makes up for the terrible characterization and general lack of plot complexity.
When asked about his thoughts on the film, senior Savyasachi S. said, “I really liked it, the fight scenes were really well done and the whole universe is very compelling, I look forward to the next movies in the series.”
Overall, this film is a 7/10, it does a good job setting the scene and has some unique special effects, and with the scene set, the next films in the franchise might be much better.
