Editorial: Hard Work is More Important than Talent

With natural talent comes a limited amount of greatness. Sure, you have that greatness from the very start, but will you really improve if you don’t work hard? Hard work is more important than talent since the amount of prowess one can achieve is unlimited. Dwayne Johnson said, “Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success.” One of the most important things when it comes to improving is having routine practices. Say you wanted to enhance your cooking ability, the best way would be to keep cooking for others and getting specific feedback on how to be better.

Talent is important when trying to achieve a high level of prowess, but without work, talent means little. If someone possesses some sort of talent, but doesn’t work hard to maximize their ability, then that talent is essentially wasted. On the other hand, one who does not possess talent but works extremely hard can often still master their ability in the field they have chosen. Therefore, as Kevin Durant said, “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.” While most people might think that top-class athletes have talent to start off with, there are actually multiple athletes who started from the bottom and were able to become the best solely through hard work. The world is full of talented people, but no one ever realizes their talent unless they are able to show it through hard work.

Hard work is undoubtedly more important that talent, but talent isn’t useless by itself. Talent works as motivation to make people persevere. If you keep trying hard but show no sign of improvement, you will likely quit. If you have a bit of talent to begin with, you see more readily that you are capable of greatness. While hard work is more crucial to overall success, talent helps to make sure people don’t give up on that tough journey.
